Youth Sports: Are They Really For The Youth?

A 42 game schedule for 910 year olds! Tournaments every Saturday and Sunday where 910 year olds play 3 games on each day with 20 minute halves!

Did your jaw drop at these revelations? It should. These are 9 amp; 10 year olds playing in a tournament league in games that are longer than 32 minute high school games and in a schedule that would test any college team.

I just moved to Oregon and in talking with an acquaintance here learned that his exwife just signed their son up to play in the league described above. A couple of questions came immediately to mindno make that numerous questions.

Is this schedule for the adults or the kids?

Do the parents realize that all day each Saturday amp; Sunday all they are going to do is sit waiting for the next game?

Would any sane high school coach allow their players to play in three games in one day? In fact the rule book will not allow it.

Twenty minute halvesthat means a 40 minute game even if it is a running clock. High school games are 32 minutes.

42 games in a season! Colleges may play 45 games over a 4 month period.

I have written many times in my articles about youth sports being for the youthnot for the adults! Here is a quote from an article I wrote earlier this year: Youth basketball is for the youth. A child must be allowed to be a child. They should be allowed to have fun with learning and playing the game and experience the joy.

Young players have so much pressure placed on them to participate and often to win in sports that is just unnatural for kids to be subjected to. Add the expectations of parents and coaches to this mix and weve eliminated much of what being a kid is all about. With all the angst causing things coming at them from every direction related to school clubs and other activitiesnow add all this time a kid has to be a kid being tied up in a tournament every weekend. Oh I forgot to mentionthese teams also practice 3 times a week.

Where were the sane and clear thinking adults while all this was being planned and passed into action? Didnt anyone involved stop to think of what injuries can be inflicted upon developing young bodies from all this overvigorous activity? Didnt anyone care? There are many precedents for how to set up and run a youth sports program that is for the youths enjoyment and safe physical development. Obviously these kinds of programs were never looked at or if they were they were dismissed.

This is so much of what is wrong about youth sports in todays society. We have been bombarded with sexual abuse issues anger issues and overreaching programs and schedules like the one I describe here plus sports burnout at an early age.

When will the parents wake up fully to the fact that these types of programs are not in the best interests of the kids they so willingly put at risk. What tragedy must befall some unsuspecting child in order to awaken adults to the injustice of what they are pushing at their kids?

Unfortunately just about every kind of tragedy one could imagine in youth sports has already occurred. Because of these many organizations and communities have recognized the horrors of youth sports and taken wonderful remedial steps toward offering programs that have helped to bring joy wonder and FUN to their youthful participants. For the rest what will it take before the realization dawns on them of the harm that is being visited on todays youth and the repercussions that will be brought forward in the future as these kids mature?

Youth BasketballTeaching Balance And Control

Everything has its processmdash;a beginning a middle and an end or final result.

I was taught that learning is a process that passes through three phases before

reaching the final phase of excellence. 1 The initial phase is where we dont know what we dont know. Were newbies; without an inkling of what we are about to attempt. Were like newborn babies with a clean empty slate. Well call this phase Unconscious incompetence;. 2 As we begin to take on information and act on it we are learning how to apply this information but we still dont perform the skill well. We can glimpse the future and see others who are farther along the learning curve and we know that there is more. Well call this phase Conscious Incompetence;. 3 Now we have arrived at a plateau where we know enough to perform the skill weve been trying to attain and we can perform it but perhaps not well all the time because we still have to think about it. The longer we stay in this phase the more we learn the more we practice the skill the better we become at performing the task. Well call this phase Conscious Competence;. 4 With each plateau weve built new information upon the foundation of the information and skills we learned before. If were out of phase 3 weve entered the phase of excellence where a task can be performed without having to think about it. The skill has been learned. Weve risen above the others who are still going through the learning curve. We must however be guarded now about thinking were better than everyone else. We must be cognizant that there are othersmdash;many othersmdash;who have also attained this level and their skills may be at a higher level. Well call this phase Unconscious Competence;.

This article illustrates the first level by assuming the youngsters in your charge

know little or nothing about the game of basketball. Before we can run we must pass through competency phases of crawling and walking. So we begin at the most elemental level breaking down information that must be assimilated along the long road to unconscious competency.

First show them around the playing floor. Talk to them about the lines and

places on the floor and what they mean. Explain to them that in every sport there are certain things which players must have in common. In this article we take the first stepmdash;teaching balance and control.

There are a lot of subtleties in the game of basketball that are as important to

playing the game as are dribbling passing and shooting.

Usually as a player grows in the game balance and body control become less of an issue. But for the young player these things are very important for without their mastery the game will not be played well. Again these things need to be taught.

The first thing we do is to demonstrate a good stance universally referred to in

sports as the ready stance;. We want the feet under the player and a little wider than the hips. Drop the hips and flex the knees a little. Dont bend over at the waist but keep the back fairly straight without being stiff. Keep the weight evenly distributed on both feet with the point of balance being directly below the buttocks and between the feet. This puts the point of balance at the midpoint of the body. The arms are loose hanging down and slightly bent at the elbows with the hands in front of the hips open and ready to react.

A player standing up straight with the feet close together can be knocked out of position and off balance easily and is slower to react. The ready stance; gives the player a stronger base for balance and the ability to react more quickly than an upright stance.

I have the players line up along the end line and I go down the line checking their

stances for the right look and for balance. I then have them stand up and go into a balanced stance. I push each player in different directions to test their balance. Everyone must pass this simple test before we can continue. If a child cannot pass this test of balance the chances are that child will have difficulty with most large muscle activities.

A child without good balance will not be able to have control while dribbling

or moving around the floor.

Now with all the players on the end line we will teach them how to run up the

court under control as fast as the individual can go without sacrificing control and come to a stop in two steps 12 stop. On the whistle they will run forward and on the next whistle they must come to a stop in two steps without losing their balance taking more steps or falling over.

In order to do this we must teach them to drop their hips and widen their stance

slightly as they begin to stop all the while keeping the body weight center of gravity over the midpoint;. It wont take long for them to accomplish this.

Once they have this part on the next whistle they will reverse and run backwards repeating the same balanced 12 stop. We keep this back and forth exercise going until everyone has the concepts and the balance and control down. Do this drill in as many consecutive practice sessions as needed to get it right.

We go back to the end line to teach the stutterstep. From a balanced stance we have the players jog in place barely lifting the feet from the floor as they jog. We have them alternate the tempo speeding up slowing down etc. When they have this part they move up the floor varying the tempo of their movement giving them the stuttering effect. Then add the whistle. Run hard on the whistle get the body under control as in the 12 stop and do a stutterstep then proceed to run hard until the next whistle. Be more interested in balance and control than speed! Emphasize quickness never going so fast youre out of control.

Now you can back up to the first drill and put the two drills together. Do the forward 12 stop backward 12 stop forward stutterstep etc. Were beginning to put together a sequence drill.

Next is the openstep. With the players on the end line have them do a stutterstep in place then place weight on the right foot faking a step to the right. Then push off the right foot while stepping out to the left with the left foot. Have the players imagine a defender standing in front of them and they have to sidestep the opponent. We want to have them think we are going to our right hence the fake step with the right foot. Then we abruptly step out in the opposite direction of the fake an openstep with the left foot. We do the same thing in the other direction starting with the stutterstep. Fake with the left foot to the left put weight on that foot and step out to the right with an openstep with the right foot.

Now have them slowly progress up the court: Stutterstep fake going right then openstep left; continue up court stutterstep fake left openstep right. We step it up a little after theyve gotten the hang of it. Have them jog until the whistle blows then stutterstep and follow this with the fake and openstep. They continue up court and on the next whistle stutterstep then fake and openstep to the other side. Continue alternating the sides until they have it down well.

After each individual skill has been learned now the coach can put all these skills together into one drill I call the Balance amp; Control Sequence Drill. Each drill is performed in the sequence as related above with little pause or coaching during the drill. Run this Sequence Drill every day until there is general mastery by each playermdash;the Unconscious Competence; factor.

Youth Basketball: Teaching Offense To 910 Year-olds

I am often asked about how to teach offense to 9 and 10 yearolds. Those asking usually fall into two categories: 1 Those in rec programs and 2 Those in competitive programs.

While the former would like to win it isnt their overriding motivation. They really want to know how to teach offensive skills and what kind of an offense would be appropriate for that age group.

The latter group cares more about having a winning offense and less about teaching the whole group offensive skills. They will usually verbalize something about preparing the kids to be successful high school players but inside they really want a group of the best 910 year old studs/studettes they can muster. After all winning is their real motivation for asking my ideas about what kind of an offense to run.

I have consistently stated that I think 9 and 10 yearolds don’t need offensive systems. They need to be taught fundamentalshow to move without the basketball.

When one player has the ball the other four teammates should be moving with a purpose without the ball. This means cutting to the basket for a pass screening away for another player or moving to balance the floor. This is continuous motion and when the player with the ball passes that player also joins the purposeful movement. The player with the ball is looking to pass shoot or attack the basket. On offense it’s an unending cycle of cuts screens and floor balance movement. If you teach these things to a 9 or 10 yearold with everyone moving purposefully in unison you have offense. Some coaches either don’t understand this or still want to have a set offense.

So quickly heres my idea about how to win at 910 y.o. basketballand it doesnt require much teaching of offense. Teach aggressive zone defense trapping the dribbler at every opportunity because they usually dont dribble all that well. Force the other 4 offensive players to move well pass well and shoot well from long distanceall of which they dont usually do well at this age. Defense trumps offense here at this level. Teach aggressive team rebounding especially from the zone defense. Teach fast break from every opportunity utilizing the rewards of tough zone D and rebounding. The fast break will become your offense resulting in layups and saving all that practice time trying to teach more sophisticated offensive sets.

The above scenario would work better for a competitive situation where they have more practices and more games to hone their skills. It works well for coaches who just want to win and arent too big on teaching skills. Competition leagues usually allow for more practices an expanded game schedule where they gain playing experience and have no rules about substitution so the STUDS can stay on the floor together pressing defenses or running up the score on opponents.

The biggest drawbacks for rec programs are lack of practice time and rules of play within the program. YMCA programs at this age level as an example usually require that everyone plays at least half the game substituting every 4 minutes with an 8minute running clock have no fast break no pressing defense and a 20 point rule for stopping keeping score. In rec programs a couple of 2man plays will work better than any offensive set involving 5 players who may have questionable skills. My opinionI think designing offense at this age for rec programs is a waste of time. Teach the fundamentals instead and let offense happen as a result of play.

Frankly no competitive offense will function well without each player being able to understand the nuances of playing both with and without the ball keeping good floor spacing for the players making good and timely passes dribbling with control able to finish at the basket rebound shoot and play man defense. Having 5 players on the floor who can do all these things well at this age seems a stretch much less to run a continuity flex 3out 4out or whatever flavoroftheweek offense. Yetcoaches still want to have offenses that will have a WOW factor.

There are so many offensive elements that need to be taught drilled and perfected at 1on1 2on2 3on3 levels before even attempting putting the fiveman game togetherand this is at the high school level. Sadly lots of youth coaches think their group of 910 yearolds are going to be up for it.

Your Stepping Stone To A College Basketball Scholarship

Do you believe that you were born to fulfill your destiny as a basketball star? And that most of your time in high school or collage was spent in trainings and basketball games? Then you are on step one.

Many films on high school basketball have been produced in which lead characters gain college scholarship. This isn’t just a Hollywood makebelieve event. It happens to an unknown athlete in your school and it could happen to you.

Make your self known
As a high school or college basketball player you should be focused on being noticed not only by the swooning girls but also your basketball coach. He may be able to make the recommendations that you need to land a college basketball scholarship. Although this isn’t a guarantee it pays to do well in every training or game and to stand out.

Making your self known by coaches of different schools other than yours high school is highly advised. Unless you play like Michael Jordan then you have to be able to sell your skills to these coaches. Make them notice you. Dont wait for any college basketball coach to recruit you. You must confidently submit a resume or profile of your personal basketball history and let your track record be tangible proof for them.

Good grades from classwork are one of the most important things that any high school basketball player need. Although basketball may not be linked to language proficiency or mathematics the fact remains that most colleges that offer basketball scholarships will want their applicants to have outstanding grades.

These grades tend to prove that despite the rigors of trainings and games you as a player remain disciplined to finish other tasks. The grades will also reflect how well you balance your time on different activities. So the next time you start thinking that your English grade means nothing to your college basketball scholarship think again.

Commonly in the United States right after high school graduation is when athletic scholarship applications are best done. The standing rule for age is 1824 years old. The great news in the U.S. is that there are a booming number of colleges and universities that offer scholarships. You have a lot of choices so take your pick and start sending your resume to some of the colleges that you like.

Participating in ranking tournaments
Give each one of these games your best shot when participating in ranking tournaments. When you are ranked high of course the chances of getting a good scholarship will be greater compared with mediocrity in regional or national ranking.

You should be aware that processes of recruitment are very sophisticated. You just dont go about telling every college basketball coach you meet that you can play the game. Know which colleges you want and be able to impress that you can play basketball on a nonneophyte level. Promote your skills and sell your talents.

Behave yourself
Basketball coaches want to work with an individual who has a clean track record and whom they can mold into the athlete that they envision. If you have an unclean record chances are coaches might shun away from meeting you.

Your credentials
When you have finally decided which college will be able to offer you the best scholarship begin processing not just your resume but also other important credentials such as transcript your ACT and SAT scores samples of completed work in short your portfolio. These are just some of the necessities so its important for you to ask your chosen colleges specific requirements. There are of course different requirements for different colleges.

There are many hurdles to overcome to achieve an athletic scholarship. The requirements include a lot of physical and mental preparation. If you believe you have what it takes to succeed then you have already succeeded.

Wright With High Expectations

Brandan Wright would be a sophomore for North Carolina and possibly be a star. However he had chosen to go professional and enter the NBA. Being 6foot9 with ability helps and currently Wright is on the edge of getting better at playing with the Warriors now that they face the last third of the season with a lesser number of players.

On Tuesday night the Golden State Warriors play against Seattle at Oracle Arena and Wright looks forward to get some minutes in the forward position. Wright caught the interest of coach Don Nelson in the most recent game against Atlanta; as the rookie played 26 minutes which was the most since the season began. He made eight points eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

“I think he’s maybe ready now to help us a little bit” Nelson said after Sunday’s practice where at he sat back much of the time and watched Wright specifically. “He wasn’t ready at training camp. Coaches have been doing a marvelous job working with him. He’s probably improved as much as anybody. Let’s take a look at him see what he can do.”

Wright has one clear defect in his game. He talks quietly almost subaudibly. A listener has to lean in close to hear the young man. “I come to practice and try to work hard every day” he said while sitting on an exercise ball after the workout. “Just try to get ready for the opportunities in the future. The main thing is when you get an opportunity to be ready.”

However; as Andris Biedrins is out for an indefinite period due to an emergency appendectomy and forward Stephen Jackson with a painful left foot the Golden State had to redefined their lineup on the front court.
“The times he gets in games this year he’s played well as a rookie” Jackson said. “The only way you’re going to get confidence is by playing. With Andris out I think he’s going to get more of a chance to play. We need rebounding bad. I’m pretty sure he’ll get a lot of minutes.”

If and when that happens Wright sounds ready. “It’d be good” he said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who are injured. We need guys to step up and fill their roles. When you come in to the league you’re never completely ready. You just adapt to your surroundings use your talent to the best of your ability.”

Wright doesn’t have much weight for the powerforward position he is only 205 pounds. However that’s eight or nine pounds more than he had at the start of training camp. Wright won’t be a bruiser although he does have the hurdling ability to be an excellent rebounder and shotblocker.

“I don’t want to lose my quickness but getting stronger is always a goal” Wright said. “You can’t really rush the process. You have to continue to work hard.” “He’s been playing hard in practice getting better every day” Nelson said. “I certainly like what I see.” We hope he will get better and better he has great potential.

Worthy Tips For Basketball Training

True enough how could you become a real big time basketball figure? This is often one of the questions that bugs the basketball player wannabes. You’ve got to fully understand that before you become a great player you first have to undergo some intense basketball training. Yes the basketball figures that you so admire today have been through a lot of rigid basketball training.

You should bear in mind that a great part of basketball training is getting your head in the game. This is all basketball training is about. No one can be in the limelight if the necessary basketball trainings are neglected or skipped.

So what are the vital tips for basketball training that you need to focus on?

Always be aggressive. Basketball players need to be aggressive in their every move. If you just stay unmoving on the spot and you seem to be uncertain of your next move rest assured that the glory that is supposed to be yours will be benefited by your opponent. You’ve got to exert your quick decisionmaking in every game.

Remember to make consecutive efforts. If at first attempt you failed to score work up on the succeeding opportunities until such time that you come up face to face with your chances.

Always be optimistic. The success in the game is highly influenced by a positive attitude. You should never come to a point of doubting your skills your abilities and yourself. Never be afraid of failing. As long as you place your heart and mind in the game you can be certain that your play will be what you expect it to be.

Do your part as a teammate. Don’t neglect the fact that you are playing for a team so be sure that you have everyone’s interest in mind as you shoot the ball.

Value what your coach says. Your basketball coach is your guardian. Therefore you have to exert your best during practice because your coach will obviously want the best for your team.

Play your best in the defense and stay out of trouble. A smart player is someone who doesn’t get involved in fights. This will only ruin your mood so better work up on the defense rather than offending your opponents.

Practice and work hard. It is very important that you take time to prepare for the big game. You can attend to such preparation by committing yourself with practices.

Now keep all these things in your mind and your basketball training is certainly going to take you somewhere.

WHO WE ARE:

Over 10 years ago the “Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System” was developed by 3 retired NBA players 2 retired NBA referees and 1 Mathematical genius. This system is so accurate it has produced 1496 consecutive selection wins. This NBA Betting System is a profit generating money making machine and has made all 6 of us multimillionaires. After 9 years of keeping the system secret we agreed to share this Amazing NBA Betting System with the public.

Our unique betting system currently only works for the NBA. It does not work for College Basketball Major League Baseball NFL Football College Football or any other sport at this time. However we have developed the “Worlds Greatest MLB Betting System” that wins a staggering 97.2 of the time. This system produced 55 winners and only 1 loser last season. And its yours absolutely FREE! When you purchase our NBA Betting System Today!

Anyone who buys our system and follows it exactly will make enough money to quit their job if they so desire or just make a comfortable extra income. You can literally make as much money as you want and you won’t have to worry about what to bet on or how to make money after the NBA season is over! The money you can make with our system in just one season is truly mindblowing! And when you add our baseball system in the mix you have 10 straight winning months betting on what we all love SPORTS. Next year we will be offering an NFL system in our package that is also 100 accurate and has not lost once in over 22 years! Wait till you see this one!

And this package comes with our 100 Money Back Guarantee. This means you can take full advantage of the “Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System” 100 RISK FREE !

THE RUB:

Just to be upfront and not to insult your intelligence our amazing record of 1496 consecutive selection wins in a row is not based on individual games. It would be mathematically impossible to win 1496 individual games without a loss. However we have won 1496 consecutive selections in a row without losing even once in 10 years! Our selections consist of a series of 3 games. Here’s the breakdown. On average we win game1 62 of the time game2 87 of the time and yes it’s true WE HAVE NEVER LOST A GAME3 IN ANY SERIES IN OVER 10 YEARS!

The bottom line is you will make a ton of money with our system and our selections we personally guarantee it! And on December 1st of this year we have just introduced a brand new system which does not require you to “buy points”.

Plus we do not just give out the selections for you to bet. Our entire staff bets on each and every selection we give to our members!

Although we have discussed it several times before and decided against it it was not until two years ago that we decided to offer our selections to the general public and share our amazing system for a fair price.

The only thing that we owe you and the only thing that really matters is that we have represented ourselves and our system honestly and with integrity and that you win the kind of money that we have stated and promised you would win.

You must bet only the teams that we give you. Should you decide to bet on other games and other teams we can not insure that you will have a profitable NBA season. You must have the patience diligence and fortitude to wager on the games only as we have given them to you. If you play other socalled “LOCK” games or hunches YOU WILL LOSE!

FAIR WARNING! The “WORLDS GREATEST NBA BETTING SYSTEM” is THE ORIGINAL AND THE ONLY BETTING SYSTEM THAT HAS NEVER LOST. Play Other INFERIOR systems at your own RISK!

IS THIS A SCAM? Gee we haven’t been asked that before

Absolutely not. With the worldwide exposure we have with this amazing system there is not one and I repeat not one negative article or anything negative pertaining to our betting system or our company. Every single claim we make is 100 factual and when you buy our system you will see why. Plus do you really think PayPal Clickbank and PayDot would all be selling our system and processing our payments NO WAY! And believe me if this was a scam you would know about it. Plus we have thousands of very happy members read a few of their testimonials Look if this wasn’t the real deal don’t you think someone somewhere would have said or posted something negative.
